When to Replace Your Garage Door Panels (vs. the Whole Door)

Backed into the door? Here's how to decide between a panel swap and a full replacement.

When to Replace Your Garage Door Panels (vs. the Whole Door)

Damaged a panel? The good news is that you usually don't need a whole new door. The not-quite-as-good news is that panel replacement isn't always the right answer. Here's our rule of thumb.

Replace the Panel If…

The door is less than 10 years old, the manufacturer still makes matching panels, only one or two panels are damaged, and the springs, cables, and hardware are in good shape. Panel replacement is often half the cost of a full new door.

Replace the Whole Door If…

Multiple panels are damaged, the style has been discontinued, the door is over 15 years old, the springs and hardware are near end of life anyway, or you've been thinking about upgrading the look or insulation. A new insulated door is one of the highest-ROI exterior upgrades you can make.

Color Matching

Even if the exact factory color is no longer available, a new panel can be professionally painted to blend in. Bring a clear photo and we can usually identify the door's manufacturer and style from across the driveway.

Insurance

If the damage came from an accident or storm, homeowner's insurance often covers it. We provide itemized estimates that work for insurance claims and can speak directly with adjusters.
