Common Opener Problems We Fix Every Day
Opener issues fall into a handful of patterns: the motor runs but the door doesn't move (broken trolley or stripped gear), the door starts down and reverses (misaligned or dirty safety sensors), the remote works but the wall button doesn't (faulty wiring), nothing happens at all (dead capacitor, blown logic board, or no power), or the unit makes grinding noises (worn gear and sprocket assembly). Most of these are inexpensive fixes when caught early.
Repair vs. Replace
If your opener is under 8 years old and the failure is a single component, repair almost always makes sense. If it's older than 10 years, uses old DIP-switch remotes, has no rolling-code security, or lacks battery backup (required by California law for residential installations since 2019), it's usually smarter to replace it with a modern Wi-Fi enabled smart opener. New units are quieter, more secure, integrate with your phone, and qualify for battery-backup compliance.
California Battery Backup Requirement (SB 969)
Since July 1, 2019, every residential garage door opener sold or installed in California must include a battery backup so the door still opens during a power outage. If you're replacing an older opener we always install a compliant unit. If you'd just like to add battery backup to a recent LiftMaster opener that supports it, we stock the official kit.
Smart Opener Upgrades
Modern openers let you open and close the door from your phone, get real-time alerts if it's left open, give time-limited access to delivery drivers and house cleaners, and integrate with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit and your security cameras. The hardware has come down in price dramatically and installation typically takes about an hour. Ask us for a recommendation that fits your door, your home network, and your budget.
